His voice was unique, authentic, and the vibrations in his vocal chords told a heartfelt story. By 1994 he recorded his first, and only, studio album, Grace. He stepped into Wolf River Harbor fully clothed and never reemerged from that muddy rush of water. Vimeo Buckley and his fellow musician, and roadie, Keith Froti, were sitting on a bank of the river listening to the radio and playing the guitar.
Buckley waded in the water, floated on his back, and began to sing one of his favorite songs. Buckley was in a good frame of mind prior to the accident.
He was young — his 31st birthday just six months away — and at the beginning of what promised to be a spectacular career. He might have thought himself invincible at that moment. Buckley evaded this first vessel, but then shortly after, a larger one passed by. That was the last Keith Foti would ever see of his friend.

Going to high school with the Disneyland Nazi Youth. I just never, ever seek to inhabit that sort of space again. But New York is full of beautiful, strange people. Like Quentin Crisp.

View all posts by Rolling Stone May 31, 1997 Columbia recording artist Jeff Buckley is reported missing and assumed dead after a strange turn of events while he was swimming Thursday night in the Mississippi River outside Memphis. Recording was to begin today. According to Memphis police, Buckley, 30, and an unnamed companion were sitting on a bank of the river listening to a radio.
The effect it has is gorgeous. These men do not play music, they are music itself. The texts from which traditional Qawwals are sung come from the works of the great sufi poets: Bulle Shah 1680-1753 , Shams Tabriz d. There are also love poems ghazals , where a more secular romantic interplay is happening between man and woman which I can dig. In the true Sufi way, through their music, any meaning that is needed by the listener is there for the listener to absorb.
For the true Qawwali, all meanings of the music exist simultaneously and there is no need of purpose for religious dogma. There is only the pilgrimage to the light within the heart, which is the home of God. There is only a pure devotion and a fierce virtuosity to grow wings and soar through music.
