Paladin 5e Class Guide for Dungeons and Dragons
Athletics: Strength is one of your main stats. Deception: Paladins are straight-talking Lawful Good guys, but they do have Charisma as a main stat… History: Not terribly important Insight: The one Wisdom skill you should concern yourself with. Intimidation: Another great Charisma skill for you. Investigation: Not your strong suit.
Perception: Spot enemies sneaking up on you. Performance: Not your job. Persuasion: This is your most important skill.
Sweet talk your way out of or into anywhere. Stealth: Not another Dexterity skill… Survival: Nature paladins only. Backgrounds Acolyte: Thematically this might make sense, as you get two skills off the paladin skill list, but neither are very useful given your ability score priorities.
Versatile, but not ideal. Criminals are evil. Entertainer: bad skills for a heavily armored tank.
Faction AgentSCAG: A fantastic choice, given the versatility in skill selection, and two bonus languages along with 15 GP, which happens to be the most of any background. Though they do make you more balanced. FisherGoS: Neither skill provided by this background is terribly relevant for Paladins.
However, there are better backgrounds for that particular archetype. Hermit: Medicine and Religion are your two most useful class skills. MarineGoS: In a sea-faring campaign, this is the perfect background.
Vehicle proficiency helps you contribute to the crew. Two great skills off your list, vehicle proficiency, and a feature that helps advance the plot if your DM is clever about it. Noble: History is less useful than religion for you specifically, but persuasion is your main skill.
Sage: Not relevant for a Paladin. Sailor: Athletics and Perception is a solid combination. Proficiencies with water vehicles and free passage to new places opens up avenues of exploration.
ShipwrightGoS: The vehicle proficiency is the only things of value from this background. SmugglerGoS: Evil and antihero Paladins look no further! Deception and Athletics are two great skills for your archetype.
Soldier: Athletics and Intimidation are both in your wheelhouse, and land vehicle proficiency will help on your travels. Urchin: Not relevant for a Paladin. You can use your single-cast 1st level spell for a smite.
Athlete: Not useful for Paladin. Actor: Not useful for Paladin. Crossbow Expert: Not useful for Paladin.
However, there are still better feat options available for you. Dungeon Delver: Not useful for Paladin. Elemental Adept: Not useful for Paladin.
Heavily Armored: Redundant. Heavy Armor Master: A solid feat, especially at low levels. Inspiring Leader: Using this during every short rest will send the party into your next encounter with a decent reserve of temporary hit points.
Keen Mind: Not useful for Paladin. Lightly Armored: Irrelevant. Linguist: Take the time to get tongues on an item or lean on other party members.
Lucky: An all-around great feat for any class. Mage Slayer: Casters are typically squishy enough for you to take them out with damage without needing too much help. Martial Adept: This feat is really only good for Fighters.
Medium Armor Master: You should be using heavy armor. Moderately Armored: Irrelevant. Mounted Combat: This feat is mediocre as written, but if your DM allows you to get creative with it, and what mount you have, you can really shine as a cavalier.
Observant: Not useful for Paladin. Polearm Master: Gaining the extra abilities with reach weapons is amazing for Paladins. All your abilities, smites specifically, can be used in a greater area around you.
Ritual Caster: Not useful for Paladin. The math is not favorable. You should just take Lucky instead.
Sentinel: An excellent combination with Polearm Master. Keep in mind that this has some overlap with the Protection combat style. Sharpshooter: Not useful for Paladin.
You can push people around as a bonus action, you get a situational boost to Dexterity saves, and gain Evasion as a reaction. Skulker: Not useful for Paladin. Spell Sniper: Not useful for Paladin.
Tavern Brawler: Not the most efficient use of a feat, but if you really want it, make sure your Strength and Athletics are high. Weapon Master: Irrelevant. Fighting with a longsword and a shield is best to have high AC and make use of the duelist fighting style.
The math is more favorable for great sword than great axe. A reach weapon is the best option for a paladin, especially if you take the Polearm Master feat as soon as you can. Taking the Arcane Initiate spell is recommended, as it grants access to cantrips that your class otherwise lacks.
Bard: Bardic Inspiration and Song of Rest would make you a very good support character, but in general you want to stick with more martial classes. Cleric: Everything the Cleric has is redundant with Paladin.
Whether it be a law, justice, or an authoritative figure, this is the knight who values their word and loyalty above anything else. Game Mechanics: Additional spells include utility and protection spells, like protection from evil and good, or sanctuary. They are able to magically enhance their weapon to do additional damage and create light. The devotion paladin can also turn undead or fiends, making them run away in fear. At later levels, they have an aura to protect themselves and allies against being charmed.
Play-style: You want to play the honorable knight, healing the injured, protecting the weak, and showing how great your honour is. You like to reserve your spells for role-play, and focus on your weapons for combat. The ancient oath works with all kinds of nature to vanquish those who would seed evil into otherwise peaceful grounds. Game Mechanics: Additional spells, with a nature focus, work to control movement and interact with plants and animals. They can call upon nature to root enemies in place, or to turn fey and fiends. At later levels, they gain a powerful aura to reduce all spell damage by half, and eventually gain the ability to come back from 0 hp. Play-style: You like the idea of playing to an oath that is above society and people.
You like the nature loving side of druids, but want to use weapons and armor with a only a dash of magical spells. Advertisements Batman — DC Comics Oath of Vengeance PHB Theme: Perseverant and persistent, the paladin of vengeance will tear down any obstacle to find justice, punishing those that have wronged them or others. Game Mechanics: Central abilities focus on frightening and reducing enemies ability to move, or enhance your ability to catch up to opponents. At higher levels, this paladin can move with opportunity attacks and, at their highest level, are able to fly. Play-style: You want to play the unstoppable force that is determined to get their objective.
Informational discussions and presentations that explore the powerful options available to players and DMs. This build requires a minimum Paladin level of 2, and the first level should be taken in Paladin. This character is primarily considered a melee character to utilize the strength-based abilities of the Paladin including smite and heavy armor. Charisma is a highly favored ability score, since both Paladin and Warlock spells and abilities use this score. Constitution, as usual, is extremely important for survival. At level 3 and further, levels should be put in Warlock, taking melee option abilities as you level.

14 способов создать сверхсильного паладина в Dungeons and Dragons
Controlling undead creatures can be cool, but unless your campaign features a lot of them, this subclass is ultimately one of the weaker ones. Conquest XGtE. Armor of Agathys and Command spells and the ability to frighten creatures in a large area with Channel Divinity at 3rd level. This subclass is all about controlling big crowds of enemies. All four low-level spells that Conquest Paladins get are great and useful to have prepared at all times. Redemption XGtE. Sanctuary and Sleep spells and the ability to either boost your Persuasion checks or use a reaction to deal mirrored damage at an enemy attacker with Channel Divinity at the 3rd level.
Calm Emotions and Hold Person spells at 5th level and an aura that transfers damage taken by an ally to you instead at 7th level. Sleep and Hold Person are good spells, and the ability to have both a useful out-of-combat Channel Divinity is nice, even if the rebuke power is ultimately more powerful when used in the right situation. Glory TCoE. Guiding Bolt and Heroism spells at 5th level and the ability to gain advantage on Athletics and Acrobatics checks or grant temporary hit points to allies after using Divine Smite with Channel Divinity at 3rd level. Enhance Ability and Magic Weapon spells and an aura that increases the movement speed of nearby allies at 7th level. Enhance Ability furthers this even further.
Heroism and the Inspiring Smite facet of Channel Divinity both help solidify this subclass as a wonderful support as well. Watchers TCoE. Alarm and Detect Magic spells and the ability to grant advantage on mental saving throws with their Channel Divinity at 3rd-level. Moonbeam and See Invisibility spells at 5th level and an aura that boosts initiative at 7th level. Watchers are dedicated to not being caught off guard, as their extra spells and class features show. Advantage on mental saving throws Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma for a full minute is quite strong, but the extra spells they get are a bit weak.
Crown SCAG. Command and Compelled Duel spells and the ability to prevent enemies from moving away or heal allies with Channel Divinity at 3rd-level. Warding Bond and Zone of Truth spells at 5th level and the ability to transfer damage taken by an ally within 5 feet at 7th level. However, they sadly miss out on a subclass aura. What Race Is Best for Paladin in 5e? The best race for a Paladin is one that comes with a Charisma bonus and useful racial traits for the Paladin playstyle.
Boosts to Strength are also welcome.
It would have been nice to have seen Perception offered here, but alas. Lay on Hands 5 — Easily in contention for one of the best healing abilities in the game, the formula of 5 x Paladin level scales very nicely, whilst the flexibility of healing however much you want lets you deep heal or scrimp and save your points. The added utility of being able to cure a disease or remove the poisoned condition really allows the Paladin to act as a comprehensive healer with a single feature. This is also the only way to cure a disease without a magic item or other outside help at levels 1 and 2! Each Fighting Style will be evaluated individually further down.
Spellcasting 4 — The Paladin is a half caster, which means their magic is more to support their primary role as a martial, rather than to act as a dedicated spellcaster. It is possible to build a Paladin who revolves around support, but spells play only part of this role. This feature is enhanced by your subclass, which gives additional spells prepared you may not have access to otherwise. Only rated as a 4 because of how variable its effectiveness is; if you have a high Charisma modifier, and get a good selection of spells from your subclass, this can easily be a 5. We will go through some recommended Paladin spells later in the guide. The additional damage die against undead and fiends makes the Paladin particularly effective in certain combats, and Divine Smite is one of the best burst damage abilities in the game. Divine Health 4 — A ribbon ability, but it comes at the same level as your subclass which makes it a nice bonus.
This would be a 5 if it was an active ability or more universally applicable. Extra Attack 5 — The essential increase for every martial, well except the Rogue, this is especially nice for a Paladin as it gives more opportunities to smite either Divine or spell-based. Aura of Protection 5 — A superb feature, not only is this a significant defensive boost for yourself, but the whole party can benefit. Even with a lower Cha modifier, this can be the difference between your party failing some nasty saves which can lead to a TPK, or being victorious. The higher your Charisma the better this is, but even with a middling modifier this is still a great ability. Aura of Courage 4 — Frightened is a fairly common monster-imposed condition, so being immune to it, whilst making your party immune is very nice. Improved Divine Smite 5 — Not only a substantial damage increase, being able to do radiant damage every hit can come in handy against certain creatures, like vampires and zombies.
Note: This does not apply to unarmed strikes unless you are making them with natural weapons. Cleansing Touch 2 — Whilst this ability could prove crucial in saving yourself of a party member, an action is a significant cost for most Paladins and there are far too many creatures who can impose effects independent of spellcasting. Aura Improvements 4 — Your auras will now likely cover your entire party for most combats, unless your party likes to really spread out of course. This is a significant defensive buff, however, at this level it feels a little lacking as the only feature. Some styles may be rated differently here than they were in the Fighter 5E guide, this is because the opportunity cost for a Paladin taking a Fighting Style is lower, as their available styles are far fewer. Dueling 5 — A great damage boost to one-handed weapons that scales with the number of attacks you get. Best for shield users and Dex based Paladins; better than using two hands with a longsword for Str based Paladins.
Great Weapon Fighting 2 — If you reroll when you roll under the average damage for your chosen great weapon, this can be a damage boost. Keep in mind the attack may still hit, even with disadvantage. If you were already looking to play a shield-using Paladin, and have some party members willing to fight shoulder to shoulder, this can be a good tanking choice. TCoE Blessed Warrior 4 — If you want to play less of a martial Paladin, or are just looking for some more casting support, this is a great style. Stand-out choices include Guidance and Toll the Dead , of course the higher your Charisma the better for the latter. Blind Fighting 3 — This style does bring something to the Paladin they would have a hard time getting otherwise, blindsight, but its usefulness is pretty niche. This warrants a 3 because it is something your party can build around, such as making use of Darkness and Fog Cloud.
Interception 4 — Unlike Protection, this will always help your ally. The additional Fighting Styles have already been covered above, and we will go through the remaining optional features in this section. Harness Divine Power 5 — This is a fantastic ability, making your Paladin more efficient and opening up your options. This is nice to have for some tables, and fairly redundant for others. The exact spread of stats you want depends on your build and personal priorities: some will want to max out both their attack stat and their Cha; others will be focused on being an effective martial and would be happy to leave their Cha lower; whilst some might have a middling attack stat and focus on Charisma to play a support role. You should consider your stats and priorities when you allocate your ability scores and choose a race at first level. Moreover, if you see your paladin as a warrior first you should ideally start with a 16 and advance it as quickly as you can.
If you want to include feats from ASIs, try to get your Str to 18 first as this will help maintain your martial performance and consistency. However, if you choose to use light armor instead of medium armor, you will be more dependent on this stat for AC than your counterparts would be dependent on Str for theirs. Generally speaking, Dexadins gain a lot of benefits from their primary stat, such as high initiative and better Dex saves and skills, at the expense of one point lower AC and not using heavy or versatile weapons. Even if you focus on Str, having some degree of Dex is recommended for those benefits. Constitution 3 — This is a very nice stat to have as high as possible. The hit points will help with tanking and being in melee, and the higher chance to maintain concentration on your spells is very useful. However, being a MAD class means you likely cannot afford a particularly high score here, try and aim for no less than a 14, ideally a 16.
Wisdom 3 — A good tertiary stat to have, if you think you may want to multiclass into a Wis requiring class then try to have at least a 14, otherwise whatever you can afford to put here is a good choice. Charisma 5 — Cha is a great stat to have, it ties to many of your class features and will make you a more effective Paladin. Even if you dump it to 8, a lot of abilities have a minimum of one use clause in them and other key features like Divine Smite and Lay on Hands have no interaction with Cha at all. I recommend putting at least a 16 here, but you are by no means a bad Paladin if you decide otherwise. On the other hand, I would say Paladins are one of the more heavily affected classes in terms of role play, with the Oaths and the tenets that they present acting as a strong base to ground your character in, should you choose to do so. In our Paladin DnD 5E guide, we suggest that unless there is a particular spell or CD that is important for your build or really interests you, I would recommend choosing an Oath which resonates most with your character. There is an additional Oath option, the Oathbreaker, which will not be covered here as it is a DM-facing subclass, primarily intended for NPCs.
A cool thing about having an Aasimar Paladin is that you can fly. You also get a few early-game spellcasting abilities that help you pull your weight as a paladin in the early levels. Another great thing the Satyr paladin has is its significant magic resistance. This magic resistance is excellent to help you tank when you are fighting on the frontlines, and your enemies have spells like fear, stun, paralyze, levitate , and so on. Because Satyrs have extra movement, they can quickly close the gap with your enemies when you unleash your smiths upon them. Best Race for paladin conclusion If you want to choose the best Race for a paladin in 5e DnD, you have many options, all content for that title. In my opinion, the Variant Human is the best choice for a mighty paladin. You get the ability stats you need, you get a feat, and you have a lot of lore to work with for your background.
