The Paladin table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your spells. While Jadina was training to become a paladin, her father told her that it would be dangerous to travel any farther than from Gilderdrip without being instructed first by a paladin sage or an experienced paladin.
The rest of the abilities are a bit hap-hazard for a Paladin. A big strong Goliath is similar to a Half-Orc where you get Athletics for free instead of Intimidation. Tabaxi get Darkvision, extra movement, built in weapons, and free proficiency in Stealth and Perception. The Cha boost helps a bit too. Aside from that, swim speed, breathe water and air, talk to water creatures, and cold resistance. Good all around. Also gets Darkvision, free Stealth proficiency and 2d6 extra damage when attacking from surprise. The Int may be less useful for you though. The Saving-Face ability is great in a big party. The bonus action movement helps with getting into melee range which can sometimes be an issue, darkvision and intimidation are solid pickups. Magic resistance and poison immunity plus darkvision. A well rounded choice for any Paladin. DEX Paladins could see some real benefits here. Not bad. Heavily armored Paladins can use the Strength bonus. Disguising yourself is a nice trick in more social campaigns. Change your Armour composition during a long rest, resistance to poison and immunity to disease. Navigational skills never hurt anyone either. Also think of the fun creature your Find Steed will create and get more Horns in your arsenal. At lower levels though, the difference is much more noticeable. It is less forgiving, and getting dropped is really, really easy. Keep that in mind when looking at races. To the tainted we bring fire. Your main enemy apart from undead will be fiends and eventually any non natural plane creatures. Sacred Weapon: Lv. An action to add your CHA-modifier to attack rolls for a minute 10 rounds. Does not require Concentration to maintain thus stacks with any other buffs and does not count as a spell which means you can cast a swift spell in the same round. A very good ability for that climactic fight during that part of the day. Turn the Unholy: Lv. Oath Spells overall rating : Lv. All of these are quality spells that are mostly already on the Paladin list. They skew towards buffs or healing spells, though there are a few damaging spells thrown in for good measure. Sanctuary for example is great at protecting a healer. Aura of Devotion: Lv. Getting immunity to charm for yourself and allies within the Aura is very powerful. Essentially immunity to spells like Suggestion, Dominate and Geas, as well as to equally nasty monster Charm abilities like those from vampires and succubi. Purity of Spirit: Lv. Aberrations, celestials, elementals, fey, fiends, and undead will always have disadvantage on attack rolls against you. The benefits of this will definitely be felt against hordes of weaker enemies of these types. Holy Nimbus: Lv. Great against hordes of enemies, morse specifically hordes of undead or fiends who are vulnerable to radiant damage. Does not count as a spell, and does not require a saving throw, it just does damage. The advantage on saving throws is a nice addition. Consider the nature-themed Oath that gives you bonuses against Fey creatures. The Oath of the Ancients sees you protected from Magic damage from spells along with some great defensive utility options. If your campaign sees you fighting mages or wandering through the Feywild then this could be a strong choice. Not off to a strong start, using your action to restrainin is nice but the range is short. Turn the Faithless: Lv. Can also help you pick off one at a time while holding the others at bay. Druid may look askance at you for borrowing from their spell list here. Moonbeam and Ice Storm, in particular, are viable anti-horde tools. Aura of Warding: Lv. Cuts all damage from spells against you and allies in your aura in half! Undying Sentinel: Lv. Elder Champion: Lv. Become the avatar of the forest and regain some health every turn. Takes the action to cast Elder champion, but with forewarning you may be able to trigger it before battle. The Oath of Vengeance is all about dishing out incredible damage to one target at a time.
Paladin Weapons This section covers weapons which specifically appeal to the Paladin. For more advice on choosing weapons, including those not addressed here, see our Practical Guide to Weapons. Get a polearm. Works best when combined with Polearm Master and Sentinel. Javelin: Likely your go-to ranged option. Rapier: Go-to option for finesse builds. Paladin Armor Chain Mail: Starting armor. Studded Leather: Armor for finesse builds. For more on multiclassing, see our Practical Guide to Multiclassing. If you do go this route, consider starting with a level of fighter to get proficiency in Constitution saving throws. It will advance your spellcasting twice as fast as Paladin levels, and a single level gets you cantrips and access to the 1st-level abilities of a sorcerous origin. Warlock: A common, popular, and effective option. Though other patrons have plenty to offer, Hexblade is simply too good to pass up. First, the sword glows almost as brightly as a torch, allowing you to see in dark places without devoting a hand to a torch and without asking your allies to cast light or something. Second, and more important, it allows you to overcome damage resistance to non-magic attacks. Resistances like this are common as you gain levels, and the Moon-Touched Sword is an inexpensive way to overcome them until a better weapon comes along. The actual magic stuff is amusing, but probably not important. Most melee fighters will prefer a Moon-Touched Sword, but for polearm masters this is your best bet at this rarity. Uncommon Magic Items Adamantine Armor DMG : Curiously, due to the insanely high price of full plate and the inconsistent price of magic items, adamantine full plate can often be less expensive than regular full plate. Boomerang Shield BoMT : An interesting solution to range weaponry, providing the benefits of a returning weapon while also providing the benefit of a shield. If you dumped Strength to 8, going straight to 19 can be helpful. Guardian Emblem : This can prevent a ton of damage to your party.
Good for: Paladins that want to deal more damage and handle crowds better. Oath of Redemption Description: Paladins that believe anyone can be redeemed and will inflict death only as a last resort. Good for: Paladins that prefer to talk first and punch later. Oath of Glory Description: A paladin that has made an oath to win at all costs and have their name etched into legends. Good for: Paladins that like to throw themselves into combat. Oath of the Watchers Description: A paladin that watches for and protects from the unnatural and alien forces of the universe. Good for: Paladins that want to deal with extra-planar threats. How to optimise a paladin Optimising a character properly can be tricky. Options to avoid: Intelligence and wisdom. Only invest in one of strength and dexterity usually strength. Innate spellcasting options can work nicely as you can make repeat uses. Races that grant you resistances, increased damage and mobility are also great Think Warforged with their resistances and extra AC or Shadar-Kai with their misty step plus damage ability. Backgrounds Recommended options: City watch, courtier, faceless, faction agent, gambler, smuggler, soldier Options to avoid: Archaeologist, fisher, folk hero, inheritor, ruined Considerations: Primarily, you want your background to beef out your skills you only get 2 skill proficiencies with your class. Skills Recommended options: Athletics, insight, intimidation, persuasion Options to avoid: Medicine, religion Considerations: Persuasion is going to be your most important face skill but intimidation can be great too. Feats Recommended options: Gift of the Chromatic dragon, great weapon master, heavy armor master, inspiring leader, lucky, polearm master, resilient, sentinel, slasher Options to avoid: Grappler, healer, keen mind, martial adept, observant, ritual caster, sharpshooter, skulker Considerations: Any feats that make you tougher like heavy armor master , better in combat like great weapon master , use your charisma like inspiring leader or that keep your enemies engaged in combat with you like sentinel. Considerations: Polearms can be really effective for paladins giving them a greater presence on the battlefield. Combine them with sentinel and polearm master to make it really tough for enemies to bypass you for softer party members. Much will depend on your fighting approach though. Two-handed weapons for damage dealers, one handed for tanks with a shield and if you have gone for a finesse build, consider a rapier. Javelins use strength though and are one handed so tend to be the best option. Armor Recommended options: Heavy armor for low dexterity builds full plate when you can afford it , light armor studded leather is best for high dexterity builds. Options to avoid: Make sure your armor matches with your dexterity score. Medium armor should not be a good option as you should either be dumping dexterity or going all in on it. Add a shield for extra durability at the sacrifice of some damage output.

Great Weapon Fighting: Can reroll damage rolls on a 1 or 2 when using a 2-handed attack with a weapon with the versatile or 2-handed trait. The 2nd roll must be used. Protection: When an enemy attacks an ally that the Paladin can see within 5ft, the Paladin can use a reaction to force the roll to have disadvantage. The major Ability Modifier used to cast spells for the Paladin is their Charisma modifier. Check out the list of Paladin Spells. By expending a 1st level spell slot they can add 2d8 Radiant damage to their attack. There is a cap of 5d8 and if the target is a fiend or undead it gets an additional 1d8. Divine Health Level: 3 — Paladins are immune to disease. They now make a full oath and join their sacred order.
Later on, higher-level spells like Blight and Contagion can really help you pile on damage.
Paladin 5e spells Although most at home in the thick of battle, swinging a greatsword and relying on thick plate armor to glance incoming blows, Paladins have a powerful spell list open to them. The rapid growth of spell slots that Paladins gain as they level makes them formidable defensive spellcasters, that can challenge the utility of any half-baked Cleric. When picking spells, bear two things in mind: Concentration and Charisma. Your Cha modifier dictates how many spells you may prepare after each long rest and, in several cases, their effectiveness. As for picking spells, Paladins have it easy. Use this freedom to experiment with the many options available, and test out creative combinations. Find Steed Level: Two Summon a loyal animal to fight by your side, whether a horse, mastiff, camel, or anything else you can wrangle out of your DM. Anything you summon will stick around until it drops to zero HP. Revivify Level: Three A classic.
Destructive Wave Level: Five Create a burst of divine energy that deals 5d6 damage, plus 5d6 radiant or necrotic damage, to every creature 30 feet in front of you that fails on a Con saving throw. Its potential to impair whole swathes of enemies is remarkable in itself, but particularly useful for Paladins that struggle with area-of-effect attacks. These are the worst Paladin spells, which are best avoided: Purify Food and Drink Level: One Remove poison and disease from any non-magical drink or foodstuff. Prepare this if you know a dark dungeon lies ahead. Otherwise, leave it alone. Dragonborn two-hander tank A classic build that offers all the Paladin quirks in a simple but effective package.
Blinding Smite, Revivify, Spirit Shroud 4th-level. Death Ward, Find Greater Steed 5th-level. Banishing Smite, Destructive Wave, Holy Weapon Paladin Feats Paladins should usually focus on maxing out their Charisma ability score as fast as possible by spending their Ability Score Increases on it rather than feats. This increases your number of prepared spells and makes Aura of Protection more effective. Some of the best feats for Paladins in 5e include: Polearm Master. A free low-damage bonus action attack and the ability to make an opportunity attack when someone enters your reach. This feat really shines, however, when paired with the Sentinel feat. Good for a tank, and great when paired with Polearm Master — because it prevents an enemy from even getting in range to hit you if you freeze them 10 feet away from you with a reach weapon. Inspiring Leader. Great Weapon Master. Gives you a free attack after a killing blow or critical strike and allows you to deal bigger damage at the cost of a less accurate attack. Resilient Constitution. Always useful, especially if your Constitution score is currently sitting at an odd number. War Caster. Advantage on concentration checks, ability to use somatic components of spells while your hands are full, and the ability to cast some spells as an opportunity attack. Some of these feats are better than others, depending on your character build. Ensnaring Strike and Speak with Animals spells and the ability to restrain creatures with Channel Divinity at 3rd level. Moonbeam and Misty Step spells at 5th level and an aura that grants spell resistance to nearby allies at 7th level. This nature-themed subclass leans into the control aspect of the Paladin, adding multiple methods for restraining enemies. Misty Step is also useful on just about every character in DnD. Overall, a solid subclass with an easy-to-parse set of tenets. Protection from Evil and Good and Sanctuary spells and the ability to add damage and a light effect to your weapon with Channel Divinity at 3rd level. Lesser Restoration and Zone of Truth spells at 5th level and an aura that protects against charm at 7th level. This is a balanced Paladin archetype that focuses somewhat on damage and utility. Paladins already have access to the Protection and Truth spells, and the other bonus spells are okay. Protecting against charm can be big against a spell like Hypnotic Pattern , but this aura is definitely on the weaker side. Hold Person and Misty Step spells at 5th level and the ability to instantly chase an enemy after hitting them with an opportunity attack.

Paladin 5e Guide
Thematically a Fiend Paladin who is resistant to fire like a Blackguard just sounds badass. The Variant Tieflings are a mixed bag.. Hellish Rebuke and Darkness give you some ranged options and utility. Charm person and Entrall based on your Charisma spellcasting modifier are also solid options if used correctly. Hellfire : Replacing the hellish rebuke with burning hands helps your ability to handle some hordes, not a huge change though. Winged: Instead of extra spells you get to fly around when not wearing heavy armour. Darkvision, resistance to necrotic and radiant damage, free Light cantrip and a long-rest recharge, scaled-back version of Lay on Hands that means you can conserve some of your actual Lay on Hands.

Can also help you pick off one at a time while holding the others at bay. Druid may look askance at you for borrowing from their spell list here. Moonbeam and Ice Storm, in particular, are viable anti-horde tools.
Below, we break out all the details. Using this ability, druids will now be able to call animal familiars, summon magical healing blossoms and perform a number of other actions as they progress in levels. So whether a player wants to transform into a wolf or a bear, the basic stat block would remain the same with bonuses added based on their ability scores. Initially, players will only have access to the Animals of the Land, with the Sky and Sea options available at later levels. That being said, players will eventually have the ability to turn to smaller-sized creatures and customize their animal form, including creating optional hybrid versions which could potentially allow for a druid to transform into something like an owlbear.
Later levels will also be able to shift in and out of wildshape without wasting an action.

Command a creature in melee with you to drop its weapons, and pick them up using your Object Interaction, effectively disarming them. Command a creature to halt to keep it still but not give ranged characters disadvantage. Shield of faith — A solid buff spell that increases AC by 2 and only takes a bonus action to cast. Bless is usually better, but sometimes you want this.
For such a low level spell, this effect is very powerful, and can severely hinder the large number of monsters who rely on attacks and are crippled by being frightened. However, this costs concentration both before and after the strike. Sacred Oath — Oath of Devotion. In encounters against these creature types, this is very handy. If you are about to short rest and have an unspent Channel Divinity, you can recover a slot for no cost. Spells Prepared 1st Level: bless, command, protection from evil and good, sanctuary, shield of faith, wrathful smite. Sanctuary D — Also situational. Level 3 Strategy At this level, we get significantly better at taking on combats where we get a round to prepare, as we can set up Sacred Weapon and wrathful smite in one turn before combat starts. If we run up against undead or fiends, we also have a powerful tool against them in Turn the Unholy.
While the main reason for this is to boost the power of Aura of Protection at level 6, this has some notable benefits for us now: It raises the DC of all of our spells, the bonus to hit from Sacred Weapon, and our number of spells prepared. Spells Prepared 1st Level: bless, command, heroism, protection from evil and good, sanctuary, shield of faith, thunderous smite, wrathful smite.
DnD Paladin 5e class guide 2023
As far as weapons and armor go, you have some options. You could go with a great weapon such as a greatsword or greataxe or, and this is what I recommend, you could use a scimitar of speed. This stands to give you three attacks per turn as early as 5th level. What the Damage Dealer build excels in: Putting damage downrange Eliminating dangerous foes more quickly Relentless Avenger and Vow of Enmity work together to keep the enemy in range while giving you advantage on attack rolls Battlefield movement.
To start off I want to take our core color and add in Red to see what sort of Paladin is bread from these colors influences. Coloring their view of the world around them, and vengeance can seem like the only outlet for such emotions. Not just vengeance on those who did them wrong, but against all who act with hate towards others. It is an act of violence against those who do wrong to the weak and judgment handed out is this characters only recourse. What I mean is that there are those are acted upon by ruthless external forces who are unable to stand up to such aggressors and the oath of vengeance paladin is there to fill in that role, by being that act of recourse for those unable to do so, placing fear in the heart of those who bring fear to others. In the case of our White Red character they had felt the hand of an evil force mar their view of the world and vowed that such horrific actions should never go unpunished.
They found that the sword, shield and divine magic were tools they could use to enact vengeance on the behalf of others, for those who could not stand up for themselves. They now see themselves as Judge Jury and executioner. This outlook and life have hardened them with an unquenchable resolve. You see a traumatic experiences at a young age can harden a person and such is the case of this version of the Paladin. One which defines the characters life thereafter. White in this regard is the expression of Judgment and Justice, justice on the behalf of others to weak to stand against the darkness of the world. The issue is that Justice is blind, and can be dished out when it is potentially not appropriate. This can add a lot of nuance to your character when playing them. Red in this context is the anger which is bread our character and their chosen oath. There is an rage which is inherent in vengeance whether it is justified or not, and this can mare our paladins view of the world.
When we create our characters we want them to be complex and faults such as these can bread complexity and lead to moments that some Paladin role-players might be afraid to tread and yet by using the colors present their hand is forced. As you can already see the Paladin can be dynamic in its motivations when we take a look at what could lead to such oaths and how those could be played out in your campaigns. To do this I want to remove Red and add in Green. Its a desire to kindle the light present in the living, to bring hope into a dark world, and to protect that life at all costs. They see signs in the faces in the flowers, the voice of god in the songs of birds and visions of a better world in the clouds. This character, one day overwhelmed by what they saw, had an epiphany, it was them who was destined to stand as a shepherd for life. It was their calling to be the one who would take a strong position against the cosmic chaos which aims to break this perfection, and it was on this day they took the oath of the ancients and set their lot in with this order of Paladins.
Swap out one or more of their spells with the oath spells from a paladin subclass. Paladins are far more than just lawful-stupid champions of good and the multitude of different oaths are a testament to that. A nearby church or faction sent a scout to investigate some unnatural disturbances.
It has been several weeks and they have not yet returned. The party is tasked with finding the paladin and assisting them in their mission, should they still be alive. Oath of Devotion. The paladin seeks admission into a secret or exclusive order, but must find a way to prove themselves. They are seeking companions for a dangerous quest to slay a great evil. Oath of Glory. A fellow traveler approaches the party and begins questioning them regarding a group of roving bandits or marauders. The traveler seeks to enact their vengeance on the bandit leader and offers the party a family heirloom or some other reward in exchange for their aid. Oath of Vengeance. A band of well-equipped soldiers have taken over a small town.
Spells Prepared 1st Level: bless, command, heroism, protection from evil and good, sanctuary, shield of faith, thunderous smite, wrathful smite. Heroism — Provides a modest amount of temporary hit points, but more notably, immunity to fear to an ally. Thunderous smite — Another source of damage plus control, and uses a rare Strength save.
[Top 5] D&D Best Paladin Builds
They may be used at later levels as allies or lieutenants of even more powerful creatures. At tier 2, these paladins could be leaders of religious groups in notable cities, members of secret organizations, or serve as protectors to the nobility and other prominent members of society. Add the 7th level oath feature from a paladin subclass. Two feuding kingdoms or factions seem poised for war. In an effort to prevent the massive bloodshed that would follow, a paladin recruits the party to act as diplomats and peacemakers. Oath of Redemption. Small villages and townships on the fringes of the nation have been under attack or besieged by supernatural events. Tier 3 Paladins Tier 3 paladins are most likely to be encountered by PCs from levels 11 to 16, although you may insert them earlier as a potential patron or mentor figure.
Unless your setting has uniquely powerful NPCs, tier 3 paladins should be very rare. Or perhaps they live a more lowkey existence on the fringes of society, battling planar threats before they become widely known. Add the 15th level oath feature from a paladin subclass. An ancient forest is dying and no one is quite sure why. The reclusive guardian of the forest seeks aid in searching the area for the cause.
Combine this with heavy armour plus a shield and most hits will bounce off you. So a fencing fighter or a sword-and-board style Paladin. Great Weapon Fighting: For when you want two hands on your weapon. As written this is incredible because the re-roll will apply to Divine Smite damage. Protection: Another good style for you shield users.
Uses your reaction to impose disadvantage, if your party looks to you for protection this fits that role. Worthwhile if you see yourself climbing rigging and swimming in the oceans. Like Druids this gives them amazing day-to-day versatility. A holy symbol is required as a focus, which can be worn as an amulet or embossed on your shield. Divine Smite: The cornerstone of your burst damage ability. This one can especially become devastating on a critical hit, in which case the damage dice from this are doubled. Another key thing to remember about this is that it uses no action whatsoever, which means you can use it multiple times per round if you have additional attacks, can use it on the same turn you cast a bonus action spell including stacking this on top of a smite spell! NOTE: The 5d8 cap means the maximum damage from this uses a 4th-level spell slot, so you get no benefit from blowing a 5th-level slot. This may need to be errata-ed to a 6d8 cap. Divine Health 3rd Level : Immune to disease.
Great when it comes up. The archetype you choose grants you features at 3rd level and again at 7th, 15th, and 20th level. Only the Fighter gets more of these. Max out your primary stats and then take a some feats. Aura of Protection 6th Level : Arguably the signature of the Paladin class, where you add your CHA modifier to all of your saving throws. And if allies are within 10 feet, they get that benefit, too. Aura of Courage 10th Level : Frightened can be quite nasty for a melee combatant, which you are, because it not only invokes disadvantage on all attack rolls and ability checks, but it also prevents you from moving towards the source of the frightening. Improved Divine Smite 11th Level : Bonus radiant damage every time you hit at no cost. Cleansing Touch 14th Level : Negate a hostile spell on yourself or an ally with your action, with CHA-mod uses per day. Pretty neat ability, if not quite a flat-out game changer.
Aura Improvements 18th Level : All those lovely Auras you get Protection, Courage, anything from your Oath expand from 10 feet to 30 feet. Strength is the best for a two-handed attacker, both are viable for dual wielding and sword-and-board fighting styles. Dex: Dexterity is obviously preferable for finese weapons. Con: Another top tier stat. Hit points are just too important to let slide. Paladins are melee combatants, and more hit points lets them stay in combat for longer and recover more HP with hit dice. If you plan on casting Concentration spells in the middle of combat, you want a decent score here to maintain them when taking damage. It helps that the Paladin is proficient in Wisdom saves. Boost Charisma instead and let Aura of Protection take care of the rest. Defensive bonuses are also useful early though some options may be less effective later.
Enlarge gives you advantage on STR checks and saves, plus an extra d4 damage on each attack. They get Darkvision, advantage against charm and immunity to sleep. Boosted darkvision and Faerie Fire can help in an ongoing underground campaign, and the sunlight sensitivity hurts if you go outside. Maybe you can wear a big fancy hat like Jarlaxxle. The new Fey Step also has a side effect depending on what season you are, which you can change any day you want. Note that Winter is a frightening effect and is thus valuable for Conquest. Using a bonus action you can do a short range teleport that gives you resistance to all damage. A solid defensive option. Relying on at least 3 stats makes this a decent idea but not an incredible one. Get a head start on your character concept with a feat!
The small size but without the benefits of Lucky or the Dex Bonus. Many Paladins will want to consider this, there are even more sub-race options on Half-Elf now similar to the Elf subraces. Perception is a solid choice in any campaign and the other one is up to you. All the positives with none of the downsides. Good deal.
The rest of the abilities are a bit hap-hazard for a Paladin.
At mid tier levels, they get access to auras that increase the saving throws of allies and make them immune to frightened. You can also take fighting styles that help you protect allies too like interception and protection. Backup healers: Paladins are not proper healers like druids and clerics, but being able to rely on lay on hands for even a single hp when an ally is down is hugely valuable, rather than potentially wasting your efforts with a medicine check. Face skills: Paladins rely a lot on charisma which inadvertently makes them a great face for the party. Despite their versatility, they do in fact have weaknesses: Stealth: Paladins generally need to invest in strength, constitution and charisma leaving little else for other abilities like dexterity. You armor proficiency will sort this out. You can swap out strength for dexterity and go for finesse weapons, but this is a little harder to balance, especially with so many ability scores to optimise and when armor is so easy to up your AC instead.
This makes you poor at sneaking about in your clunky armor unless you take it off and go in unprotected. Ranged combat: Similarly, without a high dexterity, paladins tend to be poor at ranged combat. There are some weapons with the thrown property which are your best options here. Paladin spells generally enhance rather than form a full attack like a fireball. How to play as a paladin Paladins are widely considered one of the stronger classes. They are tough with lots of HP, access to all armour types for high AC and spells that can enhance this too , deal lots of damage especially when paired with smites and can heal. Because of this, paladins tend to work best in the thick of melee combat. Despite this, there are a few ways to approach combat with a paladin that you can use depending on the style of play you want to use: Tank Good for: Soaking up damage, dealing melee damage, protecting less durable party members. Creating a tank: High strength for melee weapons , high constitution, heavy armor to increase AC full plate if you can afford it , take a shield too. Focus on spells and fighting styles that will help you last longer in combat like shield of faith and defense.
At low levels, this will make you extremely difficult to hit with 21-23AC if you can get full plate but tends to mean you do less damage during combat. Holy Warrior Good for: Dealing high damage, still reasonably durable and very much a frontline combatant Creating a warrior: High strength for melee weapons , high constitution, heavy armor to increase AC full plate if you can afford it. Two-handed weapons are best with the great weapon fighting style but if you opt for a sword and shield which is statistically a better build then the dueling fighting style can help compensate for some of the lost damage output. Use your spell slots on smites to maximise your damage output. How it works: holy warrior builds are also great at wading into combat, and while they can definitely soak up a fair bit of damage, will lack the AC of a tank build to absorb as many attacks. Instead, you can focus on thinning the herd in an attack is the best form of defence kind of method. Your best options for damage dealing are a two handed weapon with the great weapon fighting style or a one handed weapon, shield and the dueling fighting style which works while holding a shield and allows you to take a hybrid approach to damage and defense.
Additionally, Paladins will not have access to two Channel Divinity uses per day, with this number increasing as the character levels up. The ability, however, can now only be used once per turn and only if the Paladin has not already cast a spell. While these spells previous required concentration to cast, with the effects only taking place after the spell had been cast, in the new rules rules the impact of Smite Spells will now take place immediately. In other words, you can now do a melee attack and then instantly use a smite spell as a bonus action to augment the attack. At higher levels, Paladins will be able to spend 5 of their own hit points to remove a number of conditions from another character, including poison, paralyzed and petrified. Changes to Auras: In the current 5e rules there are various Paladin Auras which are available depending on which Oath subclass the players chooses.
